Greatness: What the world sees vs What it is actually about
"It was the 22nd day of September. A Sunday. The
year was 2014. That was the day he left the country. Teary eyed and with a
heavy heart he left his country for foreign pastures with nothing but 300
rupees in his wallet. Little did he know that he was boarding the flight to
greatness."
It sounds so
emotional when one reads pieces like the one above. It is just about me, when I
left Chennai for Saint Lucia to pursue my medical studies. But in the future,
if I become a great person, not the slightest care will be given to the $60000
loan I had taken for my studies but all the spotlight will go to the mere 300
rupees in my wallet, the equivalent of $4. It is funny that I would leave the
country with just $4 but it will be made a sign of my impending greatness, for
that is how the world sees things. Pardon me for being slightly tongue in cheek
but I do believe that I am destined for greatness. It is the thinking that
prepares one for greatness. I dare to dream.
With that being established, Greatness comes from humble
beginnings. Even a giant banyan tree arises from a mere seed. It can be blown
away just by being exhaled over. Such are beginnings. It is important to not be
overwhelmed at the start. It is only the seed that manages to do so that grows
to such magnificent extremes.
I believe that nobody is set for greatness when they are
born. It is the life we live that determines our greatness. Sometimes, fate brings
success to people just like a candle brings light to darkness. But once in the
sunlight, the candle’s brightness becomes insignificant and so does instant
success. Greatness does not always come for success. Nor does it come from
money. Greatness does not catch on overnight; it arises from the legacy of our
accomplishments. Nikola Tesla’s life is testament to that. He may have died
poor, paying debts for creating his inventions but such is the value of what he
accomplished that the first range of truly clean, electric vehicles on Earth is
from a company that is named to honor him, Tesla Inc. Such is greatness.
Honest hard work is never denied. Persistent perseverance
and tenacity never go unappreciated. Greatness may be delayed but never denied.
Therefore, never ever give up. Although the world adores trivial things in
great people, it never perceives the real struggle. It is that struggle we must
accept and face to come out on top. Daydreaming is accepted for it is what
drives us. Late Dr. APJ Abdul Kalam, the former President of India, once said
that Dreams are not what we see while sleeping rather they are those thoughts
that do not let us sleep. Therefore, strive and stop not until the goal is
achieved. Until then, make sure you have memories along the way to call upon
when you do become great. A little fun does not hurt along the way.
